Bullets of light splayed the obsidian waves. The slashing winds forced back her hands, but Katrina gripped the obdurate oars, plunged them with a fierce violence into the rugged water. Blades of rain cut her skin. She must do this, muscle all her strength against the stormís gnashing jaws. If only she hadnít jumped into the boat in anger and haste! She flung her heart toward shore, a failed and hopeless anchor. A flash illuminated the horrified O of her mouth; she was drifting out to sea.
